Normal wheelchairs normally require a hard surface to travel over due to there design, but Beach wheelchairs are specially designed to allow you to move over terrain that you would of never would have considered before. You will have access to new places which you would never of dreamed of and you not limited to crossing over just sand, the likes of snow, mud, gravel and uneven surfaces can be easily navaigated over.
The big difference and the key to the beach wheelchair is the modified tires. The modified tires are added to the wheelchair to make it possible to cross over the terrain. The tire are very wide air-filled tires made of durable, puncture-resistant rubber. If using the standard wheelchair tires the wheelchair would just sink in the sand.
Wheelchairs that are used for the beach or the swimming pool have there tires made out of plastic, due to it protective against water corrosion, even some plastic wheelchair frmaes are designed for ease of dissembly for easily transportation in your car. If your wheelchair can recline then you can even slie back and work on your tan too.
Beach wheelchairs can nrmally be rented at popular spots thoughut the world, but these wheelchairs will require you to be pushed by someone else, as pushing yoursef across the the beach can be a trying exerience to say the least. The typical deisgn of the beach wheelchair is that all four wheels are of equal size which will require someone to push you.
Manual or electric wheelchairs that are deisgned can be brought but are fairly expensive investment, but if you live near the beach or travel over rough terrain relgularly then it can be a good buy. If the cist is too much there is alternative otions available to you.
One way is to buy a wheelchair dolly that will attach to your existing wheelchair, this will turn your wheechair into a beach wheelchair and is much cheaper option too. The negatives would be they are less stable and you wont get as much access as a beach wheelchair.
Another alternative would be to convert your whelchair into a beach wheelchair, this will come in the form or a kit, it's the most economical option but you will expose your wheelchair to the elements of the sea and potentially turn your wheelchair into a rust bucket very quickly.
With a beach wheelchair you can gain access to the beach and other areas you could of only imagined of before and acess them areas where a normal wheelchair can't reach.
